De La Soul on Formation of Group and Bringing Balance to Rap (Flashback)
In this VladTV Flashback, De La Soul spoke on how they formed the legendary group, along with the initial response they received upon breaking into the music world.
The late Dave Jolicoeur went on to say "When we first came out people kinda embraced it. It wasn't as if [the genre] was oversaturated with boasting rap or gangsta rap, or anything like that. I think we just formed a balance that people just naturally embraced." Take a look above.

De La Soul - Me, Myself And I
De La Soul is an American hip hop trio formed in 1987 on Long Island, New York. The band is best known for their eclectic sampling, quirky lyrics, and their contributions to the evolution of the jazz rap and alternative hip hop subgenres. The members are Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur and Vincent Mason, known under a variety of nicknames. The three formed the group in high school and caught the attention of producer Prince Paul with a demo tape of the song "Plug Tunin'".
With its playful wordplay, innovative sampling, and witty skits, the band's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, is considered a hip hop masterpiece. It is the band's biggest commercial success to date, with their subsequent albums selling progressively less, despite receiving high praise from critics. A measure of 3...

But clear your court cause this is a one-man sport
And who's better for this than Plug One
Now you don't have to worry about me squashin' other deals
Cause they've already been squooshed
Freeze a frame about moods the same which we can continue
Right behind the bush
You'll stay with me
Eye Know this
But not because of all my Earthly treasures
Or regardless to the fact that I'm Posdnuos
But because
Eye know I love you better
May I cut this dance to introduce myself as
The chosen one to speak
Let me lay my hand across yours
And aim a kiss upon your cheek
The name's Plug Two
And from the soul I bring you
The D.A.I.S.Y. of your choice
May it be filled with the pleasure principle
In circumference to my voice
About those other Jennys I reckoned with
Lost them all like a homework excuse
This time the Magic Number is two
Cause it takes two, not three, to seduce
My destiny of love is brought to an apex
Sex is a mere molecule
In this world of love that I have for you
It's true
Eye know I love you better
Now it's time to let this rhyme style
Get somewhat poured in the mold
Hold my hand and we'll pick my plantation
Of daisies for a bouquet of soul
Life will begin at the cut of a rim
Take it as filled to the rim as in brim
Squeeze your stoop like Betty Boop
We'll make Campbell Alphabet Soup
And spell Plug One's within
Forward march is the say
When transistors will play
Come into bed is the move
Dolby Sound will be then top crown
When I put the needle into your groove
I got a good thing
And in full swing
I show this in gifts, words or letters
But even without those three
Eye know you'll be close to me cause
Eye know I love you better
It's I again and the soul that I send
Is taking steps to reach your heart
Any moment you feel alone
I can fill up your empty part
We can ascend 'til we reach De La heaven
And in a spin we'll hit the top ten
Then we can meet Mr Stuckie
And Pos' brother Lucky will preach
Let the wedding begin
Shot by an arrow of cupid
Through the string of a G-clef
My dear, I claim you're deaf
And if you can hear me, by golly gee
Trugoy is ready for what you possess
We could live in my Plug Two home
And on Mars where we could be all alone
And we make a song for two
Picture perfect things and I sing of how
Eye know I love you better

A measure of 3 Feet High and Rising's cross-over appeal was the fact that it was voted Album of the Year by NME, a title better known for its taste in guitar-based music. De La Soul have influenced numerous other hip hop artists such as Camp Lo, The Black Eyed Peas, and Digable Planets.[citation needed] They were influential in the early stages of rapper/actor Mos Def's career, and are a core part of the Spitkicker collective. They are the second longest standing Native Tongues Posse group, after the Jungle Brothers.
In 2006, the group won a Grammy for their collaboration with Gorillaz on the single "Feel Good Inc."

Rapper David Jude Jolicoeur, best known by his stage name Trugoy the Dove, was one of the three members of the groundbreaking group De La Soul.
CNN was informed by the band's publicist, Tony Ferguson, of the news. The age of Jolicoeur was given as 54. In a phone conversation to CNN, Ferguson described Jolicoeur's passing as "a great loss." There was no indication of what brought about the death.
One of the most significant Brooklyn, New York-born hip-hop musicians of the '80s and '90s to create music with a softer tone was Jolicoeur.
Vincent Manson (also known as Pasemaster Mase) and Kelvin Mercer (also known as Posdnuos) met in high school in Amityville, New York, and went on to form the rap group De La Soul with Jolicoeur in 1988.
The song "Me, Myself and I," from De La Soul's debut album "3 Feet High and Rising," spent 17 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, and N.W.A. were just a few of the groups who were inspired by the album's interlude skits, conceptual sound, and samplings of James Brown's music.
According to an interview Jolicoeur gave to Billboard last month, he thinks the time's element of what was happening in music, hip-hop, and our culture accepted it and opened minds and spirits to see and try new diverse things.

Six times throughout their career, De La Soul were nominated for a Grammy, and in 2006, their performance on "Feel Good Inc." earned them the award for best pop collaboration with vocals.
In 2021's "Spider-man: No Way Home," the band's song "The Magic Number," off their debut album "3 Feet High and Rising," played during the film's closing credits.
Rekindled interest in De La Soul was stymied by the fact that their hippie-inspired song from "No Way Home" wasn't available for streaming due to sample clearance issues with the group's former label, Tommy Boy Records, dating back decades.
Reservoir Media's 2021 acquisition of De La Soul's catalogue opened the path for the famous trio's songs to be made available for streaming on major platforms. Billboard reports that the band's first six albums will be made available digitally beginning in March of 2023.
Jolicoeur and De La Soul's 2016 CD, "And the Anonymous Nobody..." was their most recent joint effort.
Starting on April 8, 2023, De La Soul was set to do three concerts in the United Kingdom.
Trugoy Dave, of the group De La Soul, "has gone up to be with the day of the stars with the Master," vocalist Pharell Williams wrote in a Twitter tribute. To his loved ones, to The Soul, and to all of us who have been enriched by his presence: "love, light, and wonderful vibrations."
Erick Sermon, a rapper and record producer, paid tribute to Jolicoeur on Instagram by writing, "This one hurts. Dave, a member of the Long Island rap group # Delasoul #plug2, passed away recently. RIP”
